Civil rights cases are often emotionally charged, with damaging allegations being raised and the reputations of the accused on the line. Often these cases draw media attention, heightening the need for confidentiality. PII has extensive experience with civil rights matters, including work on many cases that have garnered national headlines.

Playing a key role in the monitoring of Denny’s Restaurants following civil rights litigation, PII conducted investigations to ensure that the company complied with the terms of two consent decrees. PII also conducted investigations in the Rodney King case and in case of the Thai workers enslaved in a sweatshop in El Monte, California. (See Case In Point.) Given the notoriety of these cases, PII has significant experience working in highly charged settings with demanding outside pressures.

Facing a situation that was making national headlines, attorneys retained PII to work on behalf of 72 Thai nationals who were enslaved in El Monte, California. The attorneys needed to collect and catalogue physical evidence from the sweatshop where the workers were forced to live. PII’s team of investigators combed through the site and documented hundreds of pieces of evidence. Later, attorneys relied upon PII’s work to obtain settlements for the plaintiffs from the manufacturers and retailers who profited from the garments that the plaintiffs produced. The Smithsonian Institution exhibit, "Sweatshops in America," incorporated evidence that PII secured.
