Since its inception, PII has conducted investigations in prominent civil rights cases. In some of these cases, such as the Denny's Restaurants litigation, PII has prepared investigative product for third-party monitors, either brought in by the litigants or appointed by the courts. In other cases, PII has worked directly with attorneys who depend on investigators to interview witnesses and secure evidence.
For example, in one fair housing case, African American youths experienced discrimination at a Southland apartment complex when property managers wrongly assumed they were gang members. PII found evidence of racial stereotyping, which allowed attorneys to secure a $1.7 million settlement for the victims and prevented apartment owners from evicting the families.
Often, these cases draw media attention, heightening the need for confidentiality. PII conducted investigations in the case of the Thai workers enslaved in an El Monte sweatshop [see Case in Point], in the Rodney King case, and in a Riverside County police abuse case involving the videotaped beating of two Latinos. Given the notoriety of these cases, PII's investigative team is sensitive to outside pressures and can operate effectively in highly charged settings. |
