PII works closely with civil and criminal attorneys practicing in both large and small firms. The firm is also frequently retained by large organizations to conduct neutral, third-party investigations or to develop investigative training.

Civil and criminal

When working for attorneys in private practice, PII's caseload includes investigations in the areas of sexual harassment, employment and housing discrimination, police abuse, medical malpractice, and personal injury. On the criminal side, PII assists attorneys at the trial and appellate levels, defending such serious charges as drug offenses, white collar crimes, rape, and murder.

Corporate, government, and non-profit

PII's clients also include corporations, governmental entities, court-appointed monitors, and non-profit organizations.

When Denny's Restaurants settled the discrimination class action lawsuits it experienced in 1994, the court-appointed monitor in that case asked PII to conduct neutral investigations of racial bias complaints in Denny's restaurants nationwide. This project, which lasted more than five years, brought PII investigators into contact with Denny's customers, employees, and managers in order to determine whether diners' discrimination complaints were valid.

For Amnesty International, PII was asked to investigate claims that an
Amnesty volunteer was the target of death threats. These allegations, which later became the subject of a New Yorker magazine piece, raised questions of credibility and required PII to determine the truth amid a series of conflicting statements.

For the City of Los Angeles, PII developed an employee ADR program to reduce complaints of workplace discrimination. During this four-year program, more than 300 City employees filed discrimination complaints, which PII resolved through investigation and/or mediation.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) retained PII to investigate and report to the Board of Education on whistler-blower complaints of toxic school sites and other environmental problems district-wide. PII's report formed the basis of new district procedures.

PII has also provided third-party investigations to the County of Los Angeles, the City of West Hollywood, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, the Metropolitan Water District, and several California municipalities. These organizations have asked PII to delve into a number of difficult issues, including sexual harassment, racial discrimination, and failure to accommodate disabled workers.
